Few people know that domains can be financed, just like cars or houses. And of course, cost more than the average car or house. But which will take one further? Domains can be borrowed out, rented and used as capital, and collateral, or even used to secure investment. Just ask the owners of Ring.com and how much luck it brought them.
The price differs depending on who is buying it. Domainers have their own honour system and there are wholesale, retail and marketplace rates, as well as friend friend rates. And yes, Elon had to hire a broker to acquire "X.com" - I would know, spoke to him. The broker, not Elon. But if Elon ever needs x.my, I can broker it. A good broker is how Elon got what Mark Cuban couldn't get with Broadcast.com.
Domaining is a powerful tool to expand one's social network and influence. What's a better conversation opener than "I have something that you want? I am the son of a middle class family, but being able to broker domains for the rich and famous will change my own life too.
And of course, knowing the sales and owners of names helps as well as being resourceful, but there is a code of secrecy. I got to know the owner of DUIT.com by "hacking" his website, and it's public record that someone paid USD$30,000 for the name. But not many know who it is, or what we are working on together. It's also rumoured that the owner of AI.com used to work for me, as well as the co-founder of YouPorn.com (her).
